The sudden appearance of “democratic” reforms in Burma will be the focus of Duncaster’s Jan. 22 World Affairs meeting. Held on Tuesday, Jan. 22, the discussion will kick off with video interviews with U.S. Ambassador Derek Mitchell, Francis Fukuyama (author of The End of History, and others that will add new perspectives on Burma’s so-called “democratic” movement. It will be held at Duncaster from 10:45 to noon and is free to the public with advanced registration
“This appears to turn the Arab Spring sequence upside down,” says World Affairs moderator Ed Fowler. “Instead of citizens revolting against the rulers, the generals who have been running Burma for over 50 years have decided to rejoin the rest of the world with political and economic changes modeled on western ‘democracies’. But, there’s more to the story and we will delve into it on Jan. 22.”
The discussion is part of Duncaster’s World Affairs Series, which is presented to the community by the residents of Duncaster on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month. Participants include Duncaster residents and staff, as well as members of the community. This is the 15th year for the series which concentrates on global issues from a variety of angles. The next meeting will be held on Feb. 12.
Attendance is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required. To register, or for more information, contact Fran Kent at (860) 380-5006 or fKent@duncaster.org.
