Capital Area Substance Abuse Council Holds 18th Annual Meeting

The Capital Area Substance Abuse Council (CASAC) held its 18th Annual Meeting on October 20, 2008 at The University of Hartford's Gray Center. More than 115 people attended.

Each year, CASAC recognizes individuals who have contributed their time and talent to reducing the abuse of alcohol, tobacco, other drugs and other risky behaviors in their towns. Three Bloomfield residents received volunteer awards from CASAC. Governor M. Jodi Rell nominated Maria Loitz, Director of Marketing, BVH Integrated Services and Past President of ACE Mentor Program, for CASAC's Community Mentoring Award, recognizing her outstanding work involving the community in prevention efforts.

Ms. Pat Maneggia, M.S.W., Bloomfield Youth Services, presented CASAC with two outstanding nominations. Amy Paluska, M.S.W., Carmen Arace Intermediate School, received the Treatment Award; and Officer Angel Valentin, Bloomfield Police Department, received the Law Enforcement Award.

Senator Jonathan A. Harris was the guest speaker, addressing the pressing need for resources for both treatment and prevention. "We must use CASAC as the model for our prevention efforts in the region," he said. Senator Harris was also this year's Legislative Awardee for his steadfast belief in community level prevention efforts. In total, there were 21 recipients of volunteer awards.

"CASAC's number one priority is Prevention," said Mirelle Freedman, CASAC Executive Director. She continued, "The best science and experience tells us that reducing drug use at the community level takes time: time to put the needed interventions in place; time to change the underlying reasons for drug use in the community; time for getting outcomes; time to garner resources."

The Capital Area Substance Abuse Council (CASAC) is a Regional Action Council on substance abuse established by the Connecticut State Legislature in 1990. CASAC serves the towns of Avon, Bloomfield, Canton, East Granby, Granby, Farmington, Hartford, Hartland, Newington, Rocky Hill, Simsbury, Suffield, West Hartford, Wethersfield, Windsor, and Windsor Locks, Connecticut.

If you would like to become a member of the Bloomfield LPC, or any other within CASAC's region, please contact us at DrugFree@CASAC.org or visit our website at www.CASAC.org.
