Duncaster to Host Elderhostel Days of Discovery

BLOOMFIELD, CT, APRIL 14, 2009 " Duncaster Retirement Community will host an Elderhostel Days of Discovery on Campus series on historic and contemporary American political issues on April 23, May 7 and June 24 at their Bloomfield campus. All programs are open to the public, run from 9:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and include lunch. Participants can attend all or selected programs.

The April 23 program will be called Another Hundred Days in American Politics? An Early Appraisal of the Obama Administration. This program will take a historical look in the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt and compare his success with those of subsequent presidents during their first 100 days in office. Participants will consider the Obama administration s first 100 days and look at the current president s future initiatives.

On May 7, the series continues with Wesleyan Professor Elvin Lim Defining Speeches of the American Century , a look at FDR s first Inaugural Address and how that speech reassured the nation in a moment of grave economic crisis. Participants will also look at other key speeches: Martin Luther King Jr s I Have a Dream speech and Hillary Rodham Clinton s speech to the UN Fourth World Conference on Women that declared Women s rights are human rights.

The series concludes on June 24 with Changing Perceptions: Norman Rockwell and the Civil Rights Movement . The program will feature remarks from the Curator of Education at the Norman Rockwell Museum and Wray Gunn, a member of the museums interpretive staff who was one of the young children who posed for Rockwell s stirring visual statement on civil rights, New Kids in the Neighborhood. Through visual presentation and discussion, participants will consider the impact of Norman Rockwell on the Civil Rights era in America.

Day of Discovery on Campus programs are presented by Elderhostel at of retirement communities around the country.

Pre-registration is encouraged. The cost for non-Duncaster residents is $57 per program (includes lunch) or $156 for the series. Duncaster residents pay $46 per program or $138 for the series.
